From acclaimed storyteller Bruce Basanger comes The Meander, a visceral and lyrical tale of wilderness survival, fractured trust, and the raw edge of friendship. Two college friends embark on a canoe trip through the remote wilds of northern Canada, expecting quiet days of paddling, stargazing, and solitude. But nature has other plans.
A wildfire creeps across the forest, turning their tranquil escape into a race against time. When they overhear a heated argument on a foggy riverbank and attempt to intervene, they find no trace of the couple—until a lone man appears the next day, paddling silently through the smoke. Is he who they heard? And if so, where is the woman?
As the river twists and the stakes rise, The Meander becomes a haunting exploration of loyalty, violence, and the unforgiving beauty of the natural world.
A journey into the wild. A test of everything they thought they knew.

About the Author: Bruce Basanger
“The river doesn’t care who you are. It only asks: how far will you go to survive?”
Bruce Basanger is a former wilderness guide turned novelist whose fiction pulses with the rhythm of the natural world. Raised in the Pacific Northwest and educated in environmental literature, Basanger spent years leading expeditions through remote terrain before channeling those experiences into his writing.
His debut novel, The Meander, draws on real-life encounters with isolation, danger, and the fragile bonds between people under stress. Known for his lyrical style and immersive storytelling, Basanger writes from a cabin near the Yukon border, where he lives with his partner and a dog named Cedar.
When not writing, he’s often found fly-fishing, sketching river maps, or reading Thoreau by firelight.
